What is a refurbished Mac?

A refurbished Mac is a pre-owned MacBook or iMac that has been tested, repaired where needed, cleaned and restored to full working order. It sits between a brand-new Mac and a private second-hand sale:

• New holds no surprises, but you pay full RRP.
• Second-hand (a private marketplace sale) is the cheapest, but it comes with no testing, no grade and no warranty.
• Refurbished gives you most of the saving of second-hand with the testing, grading and warranty of a proper retailer.

Choosing refurbished also keeps a working machine out of landfill, so it's the greener option.

Which Mac is right for you?

• MacBook Air. Thin, light and quiet. The everyday laptop for study, browsing, email and work on the move.
• MacBook Pro. More power, a brighter screen and more ports for video editing, music production, coding and heavier multitasking.
• iMac. An all-in-one desktop with a large screen built in. The pick when the computer stays on a desk and you want more screen for your money.
• Intel or Apple Silicon? Intel models are the cheapest way into macOS and still fine for everyday work. Apple Silicon chips (M1 and later) run cooler, last longer on battery and keep receiving macOS updates for years more.

MacBook memory and storage can't be upgraded after purchase, so buy for what you'll need in two years. 8GB memory and 256GB storage suit everyday use; step up for creative work or large libraries.

Mac condition grades explained

Every grade passes the same 80-point test and works 100%. The only difference is how the Mac looks and, on laptops, its battery health:

• Good. Fully working with visible signs of use, such as scratches or small dents. The best value if looks matter less than price.
• Excellent. Light marks you wouldn't notice at arm's length. A near-new look for less.
• Ex-Demo. As-new condition with little to no visible wear.
• New. Brand new and unused.

Every MacBook meets a minimum 80% battery health guarantee, and higher grades are tested to 90% or above, so you start with plenty of charge left.
