In the tech industry, September is known as ‘Techtember’ due to the high volume of new product launches that occur during the month. One of the most highly anticipated events of Techtember 2025 is the launch event for the iPhone 17. In their typical fashion, Apple has been tight-lipped about what we can expect from their flagship new lineup. However, company statements, leaks, and Apple’s own history have left us with some credible iPhone 17 rumours to consider. They paint a picture of a flagship phone that may look a lot like the iPhone 16 on the surface, but includes several substantial upgrades.

Apple’s likely lineup includes the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and a rumoured iPhone 17 Slim replacing the Plus model. The Apple Watch Series 11 is also expected to launch in September alongside the iPhone 17 line-up, making it an exciting month for Apple aficionados.

While all will be revealed at Apple’s livestreamed launch event in September, here’s the OzMobiles guide to the iPhone 17 rumours so far and how credible they are, as well as what we (almost) know for sure.

What to Expect From The iPhone 17

This is what we know so far about the latest iPhone to be released:

Release date

Over the last few years (with a few exceptions), Apple has consistently unveiled its new flagship phones in the second week of September. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who has a history of reliable reporting on Apple rumours, has claimed the launch is likely to fall between September 8th and 12th. Apple typically makes its lineup available for pre-orders the Friday after the launch date, making September 12 a likely iPhone 17 release date in Australia.

The iPhone 17 should be widely available in both online and offline stores by September 19, although you may have to wait to buy one as stores fulfil pre-orders first.

Cost

While we have to wait for Apple to provide an official cost, the iPhone 17 is rumoured to come with a slight price increase from its predecessor. The regular iPhone 17 is expected to start at around $1,300–$1,475, while the slimmer iPhone 17 Air may come in at around $1,600. Moving up, the iPhone 17 Pro is likely to sit between $1,875 and $1,999, with the iPhone 17 Pro Max ranging from $2,000 to $2,400, depending on the storage capacity. These figures are still based on leaks and past trends, so we’ll know the real story once Apple makes it official at their September launch.

Line-up

The iPhone 17 lineup will almost certainly include the usual variants: the standard iPhone 17, Pro and Pro Max. However, the iPhone 17 Air is reportedly the new contender on the block. A lightweight model just 5.4mm thin, this iPhone 17 is slim, to say the least. In fact, it will be the slimmest iPhone Apple has produced so far.

Camera

One of the most exciting iPhone 17 rumours currently swirling around is that the lineup will come with a new suite of camera features. All models in the lineup are rumoured to feature a new 24 MP front-facing camera, with the Pro models packing 48 MP telephoto cameras and the Pro Max having the most powerful telephoto camera to date.

Battery life

As usual, battery longevity varies by model. The iPhone 17 Pro Max is rumoured to feature the largest battery ever to be included in an iPhone model, boasting a 5,000 mAh battery that offers up to two days of battery life. The new iPhone Air is rumoured to come with either a 2,800 mAh battery or a 2,900 mAh power pack.

Specifications

While the body of the phone will stay the same size, the screen of the iPhone 17 is set to increase from the current 6.1 inches to a 6.3-inch display. The Pro models are likely to retain a 6.9-inch screen.

According to display analyst and reliable Apple tipster Ross Young, Apple is bringing ProMotion to every iPhone 17 model, not just the Pro models. This means a smooth 120Hz refresh rate and always-on display as standard features.

Every iPhone 17 model is expected to pack up to 12GB of RAM, meaning faster multitasking and more efficient use of AI features.

While many of the current iPhone 17 rumours come from reputable sources, all will be revealed during Apple’s launch. And it won’t be until the iPhone 17’s release date in Australia that most of us see the full extent of what it can do.

How is the iPhone 17 Better than the iPhone 16?

With all the iPhone 17 rumours going around, the main questions on your mind may be ‘how is it better than the iPhone 16?’ and ‘should I upgrade?’ Here are the main advantages the iPhone 17 is meant to have over its predecessor:

Improved screen experience

The word on the street is that the iPhone 17 will make ProMotion and its 120Hz refresh rate standard across all models, a notable upgrade from the standard iPhone 16’s 60Hz screen display. There’s also a high chance the always-on display will come to the baseline model, making it easier to check your notifications without waking your display.

Improved camera experience

The camera is one of the most important aspects of any mobile phone. The iPhone 17 is expected to give its quality a boost by making a 24MP sensor standard across all models. This means selfies will be clearer, sharper and easier to edit than on the iPhone 16.

More RAM

The iPhone 17 appears to be coming with 12GB of RAM, a substantial upgrade from the 8GB currently found in iPhone models. Higher levels of RAM make it easier to multitask and switch between different apps faster.

A wider colour selection

Choosing your favourite colour is one of the more fun parts of phone shopping. While the iPhone 16 comes in black, white, pink, teal and ultramarine, the iPhone 17 may offer black, blue, silver, green and purple to choose from.

Buying the iPhone 17 Refurbished

Apple usually makes refurbished iPhones (including ex-demo phones that have only been taken out of their boxes for display purposes) available several months after a new lineup’s release. You should be able to buy a refurbished iPhone 17 as early as late 2025.

However, you’ll have a wide variety of refurbished iPhone 16s to choose from much sooner, as Apple lovers upgrade and trade in their existing models. The price of refurbished iPhones varies significantly based on factors such as the type of model, its condition, and age. You can count on significant savings when you buy refurbished, though, sometimes up to 40% off the recommended retail price.
