The iPhones That Can't Be Updated To iOS 17

iOS, also known formerly as the iPhone OS, is the mobile operating system developed by Apple exclusively for its iPhone range. It has a rich history, dating back to 2007, when it launched alongside the first-generation iPhone.

Apple’s iOS operating system is currently on version 17, which was revealed alongside the launch of the new iPhone 15 series. It is the direct successor to iOS 16 and was released for free on September 18, 2023, for supported iOS devices.

New iOS releases are always an exciting time, as each update to the operating system brings in new system features and app updates. For example, iOS 17 brought in interactive Home and Lock Screen widgets. So, a user could turn on lights or open shutters in their home by pressing a button on the Home widget.

In particular, Apple intended iOS 17 to be a ‘tuneup’ release, aiming to improve the user interface and apps on the iPhone. Apple is also regularly releasing security and bug-fix updates for iOS 17 and also adding feature updates every few months.

Unfortunately, some of the older iPhone models were left out of the newest software upgrade, including any iPhones from 2017 or earlier. In this article, we’ll be covering which phones can receive the iOS 17 update, and delving into the current status of older iPhones.

Which Phones Will Not Update To iOS 17?

Apple typically supports their iPhones with 6 to 8 years of software updates. During this time, the phone will receive updates to the latest iOS version, along with bug fixes and security updates.

iOS 17 was officially released on September 18, 2023, which means that any devices from 2017 and earlier may not be able to update to that version of the operating system. Apple has an official list of devices receiving the iOS 17 update over on their website.

If you’re unsure what iPhone model and iOS version you’re running, the information is easily accessible in the device’s settings. Go into Settings > General > About to see information about your iPhone model.

If you were wondering, can iPhone X update to iOS 17, unfortunately, the answer is no. The last operating system update for the base model iPhone X devices was Apple iOS 16 .x.x.

Similarly, if you were wondering, can the iPhone 8 update to iOS 17? Support ends around the same time as the iPhone X. The iPhone 8 series can only update to iOS 16. x.x. If you want a device that can run iOS 17, it requires at least an iPhone XR or XS onwards.

Below, we’ve compiled a list of all the current iPhones that can run iOS 17.

  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone XS Series
  • iPhone 11 Series
  • iPhone SE (2nd & 3rd generation)
  • iPhone 12 Series

When will iPhone X stop updating?

The iPhone X is part of the 11th generation of Apple’s devices and was originally released on 3 November 2017. It was named the iPhone X to celebrate the 10th anniversary of iPhone devices.

As of 2024, the iPhone X is still receiving updates in the form of minor security and bug fixes; however, it will not be receiving any major upgrades as of September 2023. The last major update the device received was iOS 16.

When will iPhone 8 stop updating?

iPhone 8 was part of the trio of devices, including the iPhone X and iPhone 8 Plus, to stop receiving major upgrades as of September 2023. So, the phones won’t be able to upgrade to iOS 17.

While the phone won’t be receiving any major upgrades, it’s expected to receive minor security and bug fixes for the time being. If you’ve got an iPhone 8, 8 Pro, or X, whilst the phone will keep working, it may be time to look towards upgrading to a later model.

What Happens When A Phone Stops Receiving Updates

System updates are important, not only for keeping your phone feeling fresh with the latest look and features but also for security and app compatibility. App developers tend to target the latest operating software versions, so if you’re on an old device, it means even third-party apps could start becoming buggy, stop working, or drop support completely for your device.

If your phone only just stopped receiving updates, it’s not an immediate problem, but it could get worse later down the line. Security updates are important for keeping your phone running optimally, and no one wants to encounter a phone-breaking bug or security exploit.

New system updates are also important for bringing in new features. For example, iPhones that can't update to the new iOS 17 will miss out on interactive Home and Lock Screen widgets and the upgrades to Siri.

In a nutshell, when a phone stops receiving updates, it’ll be missing out on new features and potentially lose third-party support when it comes to games and apps. It also means that the phone won’t be as secure as before, especially if security update support has ended.

What To Do If Your Phone Stops Receiving Updates?

If your phone stops receiving updates, it doesn’t mean you have to stop using it. Older applications will continue to work for quite some time; you just won’t have the same software support and may encounter more bugs as time goes on.

That being said, reaching the end of a phone’s software support is a good sign to upgrade. So, if your phone stops receiving updates, it’s recommended that you upgrade to a later model. If budget is a concern, refurbished phones are a great way to stay up-to-date at a lower price.

When it’s time to upgrade, we recommend looking for a smartphone that still has long-term support for years to come. If you can’t upgrade your device right away, we recommend being more conscious regarding device security and the apps you install.

Newer apps may not run as intended, as most developers tend to target newer devices and put a strain on your phone.
